I know I'm behind on the Wednesday is When Day posts, but first there was the election, and there were enough posts about that.  😀  Then last week I was sick.  But, I'm back this week just a little late in posting because I've been helping my daughter who is home from college for the holiday do a film for one of her classes.

Here we go.

When does homework give you a headache?  😊

When do you put up the Christmas decorations?

I want to pass on traditions to my kids and have them pass them on to their kids.  I started thinking about what traditions I have from my parents.

The one for the holidays is this.  On Thanksgiving Weekend my Mom, my brother and I would always put up the Christmas decorations and the tree.  Every year we tried to do something different with the decorations.  It was fun to come up with new ideas.

There is a specific way you have to put up the tree.  First you put it together, (my Dad nor my husband liked real trees so we use artificial), then you spread the branches out so it looks full.  Next comes the lights.  You can either put the twinkly ones down the inside of the tree or use the stationary ones for that.  I use the stationary ones.  Then you put the other lights all around the fuller parts of the tree.  One key point is to first sit down with all the strands and plug them in to make sure they all work.

Next comes the ornaments.  Every year since my kids were born I have bought them an ornament.  The first few years I bought the Hallmark ornaments.  My son had the larger bears.  My daughter the smaller bears.  I have five for each.  Then I would get them ornaments with their names on them or ones they had made at school.  As they got older I tried to get ones having to do with what they were interested in.  Sometimes they were from Hallmark, and sometimes they weren't.  Now that both my kids are adults, I still buy them one ornament each at Christmas and put it in their stockings so they will have ornaments to put on their own tree one day.  This is a small tradition I started that I like to think they will pass along.

So in the last post I talked about developing the idea for the second Highland book--Ramsey MacLaren's story.

So now that I have the idea of making the story work as a time travel, I have to decide where to start the book. I also have to know more about the time period.

The first thing I do is start reading Highland romances.  I went back to the ones I read when I wrote Highland Stone and will read more.  I do this because it keeps me in the Scottish Highlands and the mannerisms, actions, speech, wars, etc. are in the same general area as my story even though a lot of the books are not written for the same time period.

Next I pull out my research that I used for Highland Stone because I want to keep things accurate and the same as what you see in the first book since we're dealing with the same people and the same time period.

This is all great, except that I needed a war or battle during around 1350 in which Ramsey MacLaren could take part and get captured.  I needed to know about the war, who was the enemy, and who would capture Ramsey.  That would determine the kind of treatment and tortures he would have to endure.

In comes Guy and Andrew from Historic Highlands out of New Hampshire.  Guy had been a huge wealth of knowledge for me when writing the first book.  I touched based with him again and told him I was writing a second book and I needed a war or battle between 1346 - 1350 that I could use.  Like the awesome guys they are, they sent me emails with different battles and wars during the time periods in and around where I was looking.  From that information I picked the Battle of Neville's Cross as the battle for Ramsey MacLaren.

The battle fits in the right time frame as Ramsey was about 17 years old when he left his clan to seek out some glory for himself.  He had older brothers who had all been out fighting battles and they niggled him constantly about it.  Taking it upon himself, Ramsey left to find his journey and rack up some warring experience to share.

Unfortunately for Ramsey, the first battle he fought in didn't go so well.  Thus, he spent years of captured, tortured existence.  That changes a man.

Anyway, after I determine to use the Battle of Neville's Cross, I set out to do some more research on the battle and what happened.  I love research.  Crazy, right?  Not when you're excited to learn about something.  I get lost in research for days on end.

I love being a writer.

So my brain works in mysterious ways most times.  Having said that, I came up with a new idea (or at least I haven't seen it anywhere).  I am going to do Wednesday is When Day every week, at least until I run out of material that is.

Now you may ask, What does Wednesday is When Day mean?  I'm here to tell you.  It means that every Wednesday I will put up some When's.  This is my first Wednesday post so you'll get the hang of it.

When are you too old to dress up for Halloween?

When was the last time you went to a haunted house?

When did reaching for the stars become an unrealized dream?

I will then speak on one of the When's I put up.  Today I will talk about when are you too old to dress up for Halloween?

When I was young I dressed up all the time.  In my teenage years I had Halloween parties at my house and me and my friends dressed up and had a blast.

Unfortunately, I haven't dressed up for Halloween in years.  My kids were never into the whole party ideas, except for their birthdays, so we never got to give any cool Halloween parties.  I think it would have been awesome to let them have parties.  I could come up with some really cool ideas (from years of practice growing up).

Only one of my friends does anything for Halloween that I know of, and I as of yet have been unable to attend those parties for one reason or another (sorry Crystal).  But I hope to be able to do it some time in the future.

Hope you all had a great Halloween!!!

If you have any When's that you would like to share, that would be awesome.  We'd love to hear them.
